Let me tell you about the wierd thing I saw this week. Last week somebody listed an enlarger like mine. I was curious how much it would sell for in todays digital world. The next day somebody listed a second one. Wow two in a week I hadn't seen one like mine in over a year. The first one ended Thursday. It had a buy now of $450 and no one not a single soul bid on it. The other one ended yesterday. It didn't hit the reserve but two people bid $750+ and some one bid $500. Okay the two lots weren't exactly alike. The one that received no bids came with only one lens the other with three. But the one that attracted all the bids came from a private seller and I doubt it offereed any warranty. The one that received not a bid came from a lab with a warranty.

I'm starting to see a lot of strange things at auction. None of which indicates falling prices. I'm glad I was able to get the deals I did over the past few years. My house won't hold any more of this stuff anyhoo.

Over the years I've only seen one Crown Graphic reach over the one grand mark. It was a very late, very mint Crown with factory installed rare lens.
In recent months another person has been trying to get $600 for a similar camera but with a common lens and has had no luck at all.

I've seen a couple of people listing various old cameras at ludicrously high prices (they were in very good condition, but still not worth as much as they were asking). $800 for a Crown Graphic, etc. This was two years ago when I was shopping for one -- maybe those people got another batch of 'em? |

I think a lot of sneaky stuff goes on there. Maybe the sellers are "related". One puts a camera up for $600. and the other puts one up for $800. hoping that people will see the 6 and jump on it thinking that they're getting a deal.

| There are three explanations for this apparent madness:
The seller is a clueless and very hopeful person who knows nothing about the market for used cameras.
The seller is open to offers and will sell at a lower price off eBay. This is certainly the case for some of the german dealers who clog eBay with listings for nice gear at absurd prices. One of them puts the same ridiculous prices on his web site, and one of my neighbors has bought from him, after negotiations, at a price will below the posted one.
The seller wants to establish a value for insurance purposes, so sets an absurd opening with ridiculous reserve and has a friend bid more than the opening. Bingo! There's a price.
Cheers,
Dan |
