Adapters are available to use M-3
type bulbs in the bayonet sockets. You just have to hunt for them.

I have one of the usual sort, but about a month ago I sold one with it's own built-in reflector of about three inches. It looked as if it was designed to work with a right-angle Heiland or Graflite head.

Cress offers a wide variety of adapters, including quite a few that I'd never seen nor heard of. They're listed on his "flashguns" page,
http://www.flashbulbs.com/flashgun.htm
and include the following:
Screw base to Bayonet #5
Screw base to Bayonet #5 etc
Screw base to M 2,3,5 25
PF 1,3,4,5 to Bayonet #5 type
Screw base to test light
Bayonet to M 2,3,5,25
Bayonet to AG1
Bayonet to screw base
I regularly used the "bayonet to M2" (etc.) kind, and late in the game, I got an AG1 to miniature bayonet (M2, etc.) adapter which had its own tiny reflector -- about an inch and a half in diameter, if memory serves.
