Has anyone pondered the possible advantage of enabling a user to view a message while composing a reply to it? Or is this something that I simply haven't figured out how to do? |

| Um, t.r., I just clicked on the quote button and your message appeared in the message body box with [quote] above and below it. Have you tried that?

Well, I know the feature is there. I have been hesitant to invoke it, for fear that I will not be able to delete the quotation afterwards... |

The disadvantage of replying with an entire quote is the amount of excess space it uses and it also makes it very tedious and awkward to read the reply.

Yes, but nothing stops you from editing the quote
I usually use the quote buttong so I can read what I'm replying to, then I delete the entire quote (when I remember) before I hit the submit button.
