I'm looking at getting a new lens for my Crown 4x5. I bought it with the Kodak Ektar 127. It seems a fine lens but I want something wider.

I've been considering the Schneider Angulon 90 f6.8. From what I can find it's generally regarded as a decent performer and they can be found for reasonable prices too ($150-$200 for one in nice condition).

Anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks.

You might be able to get a 90/8 Ilex Acugon for not much more. This is similar to the Super Angulon, and like it has much better coverage (= better image quality in the corners when shooting straight ahead) than the Angulon.

Dan, thanks for the reply. You've pointed out one thing I've uncovered with the Schneider and that is light falloff in the corners. The Super Angulon does solve that but at a definite cost.

I'm not familiar with the Ilex. How is f8 for focusing on the ground glass? Bright enough? I don't have a rangefinder with interchangeable cams so would have to use the ground glass with any other lens than the 127.

Thanks.

I owned a 90mm f8 super angulon and never really had a problem, even when shooting interiors....now the f8 65mm super was fun in low light. often focused by flash light.

I have a 65/8, have no problems focusing it. Also have a 210/9 process lens, its fairly bright.

Cheers,

Dan

Personally I find longer slow lenses easier to focus then shorter slow lenses. Somebody explained it once but the science didn't stick.

Thanks for the replies all. I've used f8 on a 35mm camera with no problems, but wasn't sure how it would fare on ground glass which isn't as bright as an optical viewfinder.

I'll have a look for the Ilex lens and see what I can find about it.
