FWIW....The film....held in your right hand...should have the notches on the right BOTTOM to have the emulsion side up. Fred.

Right Bottom.....

As I load my film and have for years, from the end that folds open, I have always loaded my film with the notches at the right on top, now this may be that we are calling the same portion of the film holder by different names, but as the film holder faces me, the fold out portion is on the top and the notches are to the right, am I doing it different than other people?

Just wondering, as I have been doing it this way for several years, with great success..

Dave

I normally think of bottom as down and top as up....

This is very weird. My cut film....2-1/4X3-1/4 Ilford HP5 has the notches in the lower right hand corner with the emulsion facing up. There is one notch up in about the middle of the edge. Being right handed, I have always loaded the film holders with the dark slide pulled part-way out on the left...fold out the end of the holder on the right...hold the piece of cut film by the right edge in my right hand, notches in the lower right hand corner...and slide it in. Just to assure myself that I haven't taken leave of my senses, I just checked my negs...and with the emulsion side up...notches on the right end, they are on the lower right-hand edge. Fred.

I think you're saying the same thing.

This is how I do it. Hold the film up in the dark with my right hand. My fingers will touch the notches on the right side on the top. If I turn the sheet side ways to slide it into the holder the right side is now at the bottom right.

Okay,

we are saying the same thing, I hold my holders up and down and you hold yours side to side, but we are loading the same way.

Dave

This is funny. Yes, we are both doing it right. We're just 90-degrees out of phase.
Thanks. Fred.

I am the one who was doing it wrong!

I have it figured out now! I'm a right handed sideways loader too!

Boy Fred I spent over a hour yesterday trying to figure out how I could get the notches in the lower right hand corner...

This really is funny...

Dave

Up until recently, I thought I was following all this...

About nine months ago, in a rather similar discussion, I emulated the centipede famed in song (who "lay distracted in a ditch" when someone asked him exactly how he moved his legs when running) and tried to visualize loading a sheetfilm holder. This was the best I could do --

"So you turn off the lights, open the box -- deal with the internal second box top that acts as a light trap and the foil envelope containing the film (for which purpose, you probably want a pair of scissors handy) -- and get started.

You lift the first sheet out, make sure the paper separator falls away, and orient it so the notch is at the right side facing away from you. Your right index finger will find the notch when the sheet is lying on the palm of your hand, correctly oriented.

You pick up the first cutfilm holder with your left hand so the darkslides are sticking out to the left, and the open hinged end is facing right. You now move the sheet of film you're holding loosely in your right hand into the open end of the holder.

(The emulsion side will be facing up, and so will be facing the back of the lens when you slip the holder into the camera and withdraw the slide.)

You work deliberately, making sure both edges of the sheet have slid beneath the rabbets. It's easy to miss one or both, and you really don't want to do that.

The easiest way to make sure is, when you've slid the film about halfway in, flex the free end and feel whether either edge pops up out of the holder. If it does, back the sheet out and start again.

Push the film all the way in, swing the hinged end shut, and push the darkslide in until it mates with the slot on the hinged end. If you haven't slid the sheet all the way in, the hinged end will not lie flat, and the darkslide won't engage it. If that happens, open the end and push the film farther in."

I think this is what the majority says it is doing, more or less; or am I missing something?

Precisely why I am going to write another "StoryBook" - for those of us who are truly clueless in this "Digital Age"! This is certainly a craft or "Discipline" worth passing on to the "next" generation! If any of you beat me to it, I think that would be terrific! I "feel" like the blind leading the blind! Most everything I've learned so far; I've learned here. Maybe once I complete my "silly story" you'll find a spot for it so people like me can read it - buy a used affordable camera - and quickly learn to use it. What do you think?

I really had trouble "opening" it! Loading film???? CLUELESS!!!! Now - thanks to all of you - I KNOW!

I still have not taken my first "real" exposure! I do plan on doing that soon! Maybe? It's just a whole new scary - expensive world! I really am enjoying every minute of it!

Ah, t.r....you're never at a loss for words. But, I couldn';t have said it better myself. Thanks, guys, for a fun experience...and...Simplify...if you've profited from this experience, our work was worth the effort. Fred.
