In the late 70's/mid 80's I was a field bench jockey for a company known for blue test equipment (especially oscilloscopes).
We used a product called 'Green River' to clean flux of the boards. I don't remember the active ingredients; definitely something hydrocarbon-ish. I think Motorola suggested using MEK for cleaning up repairs on their radio PC boards.
