and for those people that rather sit at home with a calculator than go shoot,here's a site that combines depth of field with diffraction degradation.

there' s very few books/sites that talk about the fact that at some point the loss of sharpness to difraction overcomes the gain in depth of field.

Shooting on a day when the cloud cover is 2000 ft. and the marine layer is at 500 ft. is akin to photographing a grey card repeatily.

It's commonly repeated folklore with the students at Rochester Institute of Technology that Hirter and Driffield (discoverers of the H&D curve, and inventors of the grey card) did not devise the grey card as the average reflectance of every object as they stated, but merely copied of the Rochester sky. Since all films, and later lightmeters, were standarized on the Rochester sky, this card would allow people on the west coast that have that yellow dot in the sky to make accurate expposures as well
