I will be demonstrating photography basics for a high school humanities class soon, using my very old speed graphic and Verito lens (an all-girls school, I figure they'd appreiate my using the original glamour lens when I start asking for volunteers to pose). The Verito is in barrel. Although I usually shoot in studio with hot lamps, I would like to demonstrate using flash... indoor lighting will be mixed, and we may be going outdoors as well. Problem is how to sync a flash when neither the camera or lens has a sync. My original idea of using a double cable release going to my 35mm camera which would then fire the flash, and to the speed graphic to take the exposure seems needlessly complicated and cumbersom. Anyone out there with any suggestions for gadgets or a simpler set up? In all liklyhood, I don't think tripping the flash manually will work as I think the exposures will be quick. Ideas? Comments? Thanks.

| Why don't you get a Packard shutter and put it in front of the lens?
Also, if you're going to be shooting outdoors, make sure that the film, flash power, and flash to subject distance you use will ensure that the flash is at least a couple of stops brighter than ambient. This may be difficult with a Packard.
As an alternative to the Packard, IF IF IF the things are big enough, look for a used Ilex #3X from an oscilloscope camera, and, again, put it in front of the lens. S. K. Grimes' site (www.skgrimes.com) gives the dimensions.
Cheers,

Kalart [and I believe Heiland] made an attachment just for this. It's like a cable release. If your camera will accept a cable release [perhaps just to press down the release arm] then this attachment has an outlet into which a flashgun was plugged. I see them on e*** all the time. It just depends on what your camera will accept. Other than that, I don't have a clue, given the restraints [that camera w/that lens].
