I have a Kodak Compur-Rapid shutter with a Kodak Ektar 5 cm f3.5 lens for a mini Speed Graphic. It had been working fine, but today I cocked it and it will not release. What can I do? Thanks

How are you using such a short lens on a 2x3 Speed?
I ask because I don't think it will focus to infinity on any 2x3 Speed -- their minimum flange to film distances are too much longer than 50 mm -- and it shouldn't come close to covering 2x3. |

I have never used it. It came with the camera along with a 10.5 f 4.5 Zeiss lens. _________________ Durr |

The 10.5 cm is the "normal" lens for the 2x3 format. But 5 cm is really tight. My 65 mm Optar is just within the limits of the workable on my Century. I wonder if it's even possible to achieve infinity focus with a 50 mm lens on a 2x3 Speed?! |

Henry, it depends on the lens. I have a 1.75"/2.8 Elcan that will focus to infinity on my 2x3 Pacemaker Speed. The lens was made to cover 6x6, covers barely more. The shortest lens in shutter that I have that will focus to infinity on a 2x3 Pacemaker Speed is a 58/5.6 Grandagon, ex-Graflex XL.
I've wondered whether 53/4.5 Biogon, 53/4 Super Angulon, and 50/6.3 Mamiya can be used on a 2x3 Speed, haven't wanted to know badly enough to try to find these lenses' flange-to-film distances at infinity.
I think that Durr's little 50 from a Kodak folder might be used closeup on his camera but not at infinity.
Cheers,

Hi Dan,
Or he could put the 50 back on the Kodak whatevercam (mmm, wonder what obsolete roll film it takes?) and fire away.
H.
P.S. Come to think on it, 50 is "normal" on 35mm cams. Do we know what camera this lens/shutter came from? One of the Retinas, maybe? I'll page through McKeown and report back. Just curious. |

By a quick perusal of McKeown, it would appear that the 5 cm f/3.5 Ektar in Compur-Rapid was used on the pre-war Retina I, II, and IIA, and on several later Retina versions not sold in the US. If you have a copy of McKeown's "Collectors Guide to Kodak Cameras," see pp. 102-103, also 107 and 115. |
