Are you sure you've got a 2850 tank? A 2850 is a paper tank. I think you might be able to convert it to a film tank by changing the light trap and adding a centre column.

If it is a film tank then it should say on the outside. The amount of developer will be the same min no matter if you put 1 sheet or 12. The tank will need a certain amount to just cover the film. After you've hit that amount you need to check and make sure you've got enough developer. Different developers and different dilutions will require different min amounts of developer. With B&W unless you're working with stock developer things should be more then enough usually.

A 2840 is a base tank with an extension for paper developement and might hold 3 reels stacked. The base tank is the same as a 2521 film tank that holds 1 reel. The lids are the same also. The 2521 holds 1500ml of fluid. The 2850 should hold 3000ml, roughly double the single tank.
Just fill it fully with water and pour out into a measure, a 1 to 2 liter with ml markings should work.
Base your max dilution on the minimun amount required for the volume of film per tank.

Are you sure about the lids?

That's Jobo page on converting between film/paper tanks.

It seems the 2850 is a 2593. That's a big tank. Min solution for rotary is 1.25litres for 4x5 film or 1.5litres if you're using 35mm,220 or two rolls of 120 per reel. More is always better then less.

Obviously that's a lot of chemicals. It's even worse if you're not doing rotary. You might want to split the tank up and just use the base. From the looks of it the bottom is a 2550 tank. It will use half the developer in rotary mode and still handle both those reels.

Personally I'd wonder if getting the centre column and the funnel would be better. Without the column are those reels going to stay in place?
