Are there any hidden traps? Or can I just cut it down? I can get some old 8x10 for a good price but lack an 8x10 camera.

There should be no traps; 8x10 sheet film = 4 4x5 sheets. Be careful when chopping the stuff up, make sure to cut it all square. if you are a little uneven and the sheets are narrower on top than on the bottom (or vice versa) they will not fit your holders. Of course: cut in total darkness and carefully tape off your cutter so you can align everything in the dark. Be careful and it will work.

Well, better to find an old sheet of 4x5 and measure. Actual film sizes are exactly 4x5, nor 8x10
