I found a nice book at our local (an excellent) township library that is worth bringing to the attention of the Graflex fraternity. (If there are any girls reading this, consider yourself frater for purposes of common interest).
The book is entitled "New York Exposed"; the author is Shawn O'Sullivan. This is essentially a history and record of the work of photographers for the New York Daily News. This is the newspaper which described itself as "New York's Picture Newspaper" and which had a Speed Graphic as its logo.
Probably one-half to two thirds of the hundreds of photographs in the book were made with Speed Graphics. There are several shots of early Big Berthas, as well.
My favorite photograph is that of a News photographer holding a Speed in one hand and with the other, giving a stack of film holders to a motorcycle courier who will bring them to the paper where, presumably, the images will appear in the next edition. Those were photographers.
Enkoy it if you can everyone. |
