|
|
I just bought a Mamiya 23 Standard camera. It came with a 90mm lens. The lens has a problem. The aperture control won't move. Everything else seems to work OK. Any suggestions on what could be causing this & how I can fix it?
Thanks, Jim |

The post about a half dozen below this one on this forum titled "Iris Repair on a KA" may also be of help.

Different problem, CH. The Kodak Anastigmat a couple of threads below is in barrel and its problem is a broken diaphragm. The OP's lens is in shutter and the shutter's diaphragm won't move.
IIRC Mamiya Press lenses communicate with the RF in the body, otherwise are completely standalone. That is, the shutter is cocked by pressing its cocking lever, fired by pressing its release lever, and the diaphragm setting is selected with the shutter's diaphragm lever.
If it were mine and I were sure there was no preview button -- I don't think there is, but could be wrong -- I'd send it to an expert. SKGrimes had been mentioned, there's also Paul Ebel, Carol Miller at Flutotscamerarepair.com, midwest as has been mentioned, and there are many others. |

Maybe OP could sort this out for us. He says "aperture," which to me means "iris diaphragm." As opposed to shutter (i.e., timing) mechanism, blades, etc. |

It is the "iris diaphragm" that won't move.
Thanks for everyones comments. The Mamiya 23 Standard is a beautiful camera. It's condition is 9 out of 10. Came with two 6x7mm backs (1 new).

Can you remove the lens from the camera body?
Will the aperture lever operate with the lens off the camera body?
Will the shutter operate at all speed settings?
Can you provide pictures of the lens/shutter?
What aperture is it stuck at?
Can you see the aperture blades?
Are the aperture blades laying flat?
Are the aperture blades buckled?
Do not try to force the lever until the lens elements are removed from the shutter as the glass may be seriously scratched if the lever is forced and a blade or its retaining rivet breaks. Sometimes a lever will get jambed in shipping or stick in place from non use for many years. If in doubt send it out to a qualified repair center as previously stated in the previous responses. _________________ The best camera ever made is the one that YOU enjoy using and produces the image quality that satifies YOU. |

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your help & suggestions.
I got estimates from Midwest ($95.00 + parts + shipping), Camerarepair.com ($108.00 + shipping). Finally took it to a local camera store that has a repair department - Dodd Camera in Cleveland, Ohio. They wanted a $40.00 deposit to look at it & give an estimate. The deposit would be applied to the repair. They charged me $69.99 to fix it. The lens now works great.
Thanks again, Jim |
