Info and questions for the curious...
I recently had a spring break on one of my Grafmatics. This is the spring that holds up the stack of septums. Wanting to fix it right away, I searched the house for something suitable. Came up with a cut strip from a 1 liter plastic water bottle. Tension seemed right and so was the arch. Worked great after being glued in! But I didn't think it would hold the shape since this spring is flattened completely in use. Then I found(!) the internal spring to a cheap 6 foot tape measure. Right width, right tension but needed help with the arch. If you've ever seen bithday ribbons spiralled with a sissor, you can figure out how I got the arch Glued that in and again, works perfectly so far. Since I didn't want to do a 'permanent' repair yet, I used Elmers clear Household Cement. Works fine and can be removed with an xacto knife.
So I was just wondering if anyone else has ever made a spring replacement and what they used? I searched all over the internet and couldn't find any readily available spring material. The original seems to be a bronse metal and very fragile. But this is at least a very easy and cheap way to put a Grafmatic back in service...
