Hi folks. A recently acquired RB 3x4 Ser. B looked and sounded really good, except the curtain was sluggish. I adjusted the tension and lubed the rollers and when exercising, the shutter separated at an aperture. I mended it and upon reassembly, it worked and sounded fine. Now the shutter has started to hang and it sounds like something is dragging under the upper plate on the right side, where the curtain release and mirror set and curtain winding controls are located. Removing the four screws got me to this question (finally, you are saying!) How do I remove the mirror set lever from the shaft so I can pull the plate and diagnose the problem? These cameras are wonderfully straightforward in design but I am stymied on this one.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Steve,
There is a taper pin in the mirror cocking lever that must be removed...small end is on the bottom side...set camera on the top cover, support the cocking lever with a suitable sized wood block! Be carefull to hit the pin on center, or you could ruin
the lever...suggest WD40 soak before trying to remove the pin! Can be a very stubborn pin to remove!
If that does not work for you, the alternitive is to remove the hood/GG/left side (Mirror) bushing and spring...3 screws holding the mirror to the shaft! Remove shaft and cocking lever as a unit! Mirror will flop up and down so I suggest you try to remove the pin again, and reassemble the shaft and mirror to hold the mirror in place!
Have a nice day (and a lot of patience)
Bert

Thanks, Bert, for the information. These cameras are habit-forming! I also have a RB Tele in process (which looks like a B with a slightly different front end?) and an RB Auto on the way. This Forum is a great resource!
Thanks again,

Steve

Steve,
According to "A Review of Graflex" by Richard Paine the Telescopic (Tele) Revolving Back Graflex was made form 1915 to 1923, the Revolving Back Graflex Series B from 1923 to 1942 with the 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 version produced until 1951.
The RB Series B in larger sizes (3x4;4x5) were built on the RB Tele body. The 2x3 was built on the RB Graflex Junior Body. This accounts for the simularities somewhat.
Appearently Graflex did not just drop one design and start another design as I have a RB Series B whose serial number came back to a block of Tele cameras assigned in the spring of 1922 and others have comented on the later Series B design with a Tele plate and serial number dating to 1926.
I assume that when the design/model change decision was made the new name was attached to the old design to intorduce the name, continued on the old design to use up all the old assemblies, then rebaged the new design for those who wanted a new version of the old name.
Graflex did make (just about?) any special request that a photographer was willing to pay for.
Charles

Many bodies were interchanged, one model to another during the early production years! The "D" model has a top front face plate that can be changed out to make it a "B" model, so the body is, in some instances, the same for both models....much of the hardware was also used in this way! Bert

Many thanks to all. Sounds like of this growing fleet of RB 3x4 cameras, the only one that may have some really distinctive differences is the RB Auto I should have this weekend.
Thanks again for the assistance. No doubt I will have more questions, if I can't find the answers in the existing postings.
