Yes, tightness helps. Try talking to the frame counter with graphite powder (NOT Grafite Powder from Graflex ) and then work the mechanism a bit by hand. Do both ends of the roller, the pushrod, and of course the ratchet and counter. They're often stiffer than they should be to work well. Graphite seems to lubricate them well and has the advantage of being dry.
