I have a View I and am new to this and I am wondering how to convert the exposure times from my Sekonic hand held meter to the speed settings on the lens. On the lens, there are the speeds, T,B,1,2,5,10,25,50,100,and 200. If 1 is for one second, which is 1/2 second - the 2 or 50. And how would I convert 125th sec from my meter to the lens speeds. Just set it on 100 and stop down the lens a little? Slightly confused.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you. Dave |

You're close. 2 is 1/2 second, 5 is 1/5 - use 1/4 on your meter, 10 is 1/10 - use 1/8 on your meter, 25 is 1/25 - use 1/30, 50 is 1/50 - use 1/60, for 100 use 125, for 200 use 250, etc. If you want to stop down a wee bit to compensate, that's fine.
These old shutters were not that accurate when new and haven't gotten any better with age. If you don't have access to a shutter speed tester, shooting some transparencies will show how close it is, or isn't.
Good luck ----

If you have an old meter or a digital meter then you can actually get the old style shutter speeds. But like it's already been mentioned it's highly unlikely the shutter speeds are 100% accurate. |

Glenn and Nick,
Thanks for your inputs. Time to experiment a little bit. Also, do you know of any type of national outlet which sells polaroid sheet film, color or B&W, a little less expensive than retail at the local camera store? Maybe B&H or Adorama? Thanks.

Either of those suppliers would have what you need. Probably at considerable savings over local store prices, too. Check out their online catalogs.

Agfa used to be the cheapest B&W film that I could find. Problem is they've stopped making sheet film.
Freestyle sells thier own label film [Arista?] that is allegedly just repackaged Ilford film. They have a lot of colour slide film in the clearance section of the website. I don't remember if any is 4x5 but you could cut the 8x10 down. From the people that have used it supposedly it's in pretty good condition in spite of being old. |

Also try http://www.jandcphotography.com
They sell several brands of film from 35mm through 12x20 including the 2x3, 3x4, and 4x5 sizes for our Graflexes. The film comes from several European plants. I've been very happy with their service.

Maybe I'm wrong? But did anyone notice the word "Polaroid" in that request?
B&H and Adorama probably have prices as good as anyone else. I don't buy from them because I have to pay ridiculous taxes and shipping from them. When I had to cough up the huge amount for 8x10 Polaroids, I went searching and found
http://www.uniquephoto.com/
They seem to have about the best price in Polaroid film...
But! If I had a local photo store that actually carried LF gear and Polaroid sheet film, I would gladly pay a few extra dollars to help support them!!!

Thank you all for all of the recommendations. I will check them out, and we really do need to support our local photo retail outlets when feasible so they will stay on the scene and be there when we need their assistance. Can't do without them.
Thanks again |

Rich, you mean to say that there is NO photo store in and around the Home of Great Yellow Father that sells LF gear and Polaroid sheet film? Why even down here in lil ol' Allentown we can get this stuff locally. Not that I use either, but I know folks who do. Mercy!

Well it sure wouldn't be the first time I've complained about it! We do supposedly have one 'good' shop up in Rochester. Problems there are: I always forget the name and I hardly ever manage to get to Rochester...
Outside of the city, there's nothin for as far as a tank-o-gas will get ya. As far as I know anyway... And when I moved to this area, I thought I was going to live next to photo-mecca. What a dissappointment! Thank goodness for the internet or I would have given up photography altogether!
And Henry. You're showing your age there? And I thought you were one of the old guys?

The RIT bookstore (Allen might know this as the Mechanics Institute bookstore ) actually has a fairly decent line of film, and equipment. When in town I try hard to make run through the store and stock up. It's one of the few places I can buy Rodinal anymore. There maybe embarassing moments when you pay

I never thought of RIT. Next time I'm up there, I'll hvae to stop in and look around. Do they sell to anyone, or do you have to have been a student there 100 years ago?
